Melbourne Victory acting captain Leigh Broxham has lauded the recruiting in the A-League’s 11th season, saying he has not seen anything like it before.

Broxham believes the reason the league is so close this campaign is because of shrewd transfer dealings teams have made in the market.

“I think the recruiting has been really good, in this transfer window I’ve never seen the A-League be so busy. Perth recruited players and it’s rewarding them at the moment, Melbourne City’s recruiting too,” Broxham said.

“In my 11 years in the A-League I’ve never seen it like that, it was exciting and good and that can be part of the reason and the foreign players coming in. The coaches have been a lot more careful with who they bring in too.”

Victory take on Adelaide United on Friday night and may prove to be a crucial clash for the blue and white of Melbourne.

United sit third on the ladder with only a point separating themselves and Victory. The Reds had a horror start to the season, but have really picked things up, surprising many.

With a suspended three-point deduction hanging over their heads, wins could become all the more crucial for the reigning champions. At the moment, they sit fifth on 29 points and look closer to missing out finals rather than winning a premiership. However Broxham is not worried.

“There’s not many games left, these are games we need to win, we need to beat the side at the top to be premiers and to be champions,” he said.

“It’s a no brainer we need to win these games at home and they’re very important for us,”

“Adelaide play a similar style and it seems it was just a matter of time before they got it right, the coach came in and he took some time to get his message across, sometimes it’s not easy.

“We’ve seen it in the past with other coaches, they’re doing well, they’ve got good quality throughout their squad.

“It was only a matter of time before they’d start putting teams to the sword again.”
