Big money is being spent in a busy summer window at Old Trafford, to ensure the Red Devils return to Premier League title contention in 2016-17.

As Jose Mourinho rebuilds the Manchester United squad, four names reported to be on the way out though are Juan Mata, Daley Blind, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marcos Rojo.

While the latter two are understandable, following the German veteran’s injury concerns and Rojo’s failure in holding down a first team spot, the same cannot be said about Mata and Blind, who were in-fact two of United’s best performers last season according to stats from the gang at oulala.com.

Across six key areas analysed the two apparent outcasts were consistently among the best performers in the team, both in attacking and defensive aspects of the game. Mata was possibly the most potent source when going forward in 2015-16 for the Red Devils with 53 created chances, also ranking first in terms of passing accuracy and just behind Wayne Rooney for assists – with a total of five.

On the other hand, Blind’s resolve at the back was so often the saving grace of a side devoid of offensive ideas last season. The Dutchman’s total of 67 won tackles is only narrowly bested by Matteo Darmian, while he does top the squad for blocks and successful passes.

Will their departure from Old Trafford do more harm than good for Man United’s title hopes?
