Deadly Drogba and Montreal upstages ‘MV-G’

In a game that saw Sebastian Giovinco create another piece of MLS history, becoming the first ever to finish the regular season as leader in both goals and assists, Didier Drogba clearly did not read the script as his second-half brace ensured the Montreal Impact secured a home field advantage against their Canadian rivals in their knockout playoff encounter.

Giovinco, the leagues undoubted outstanding player throughout, could not lead his side to a victory that seemed almost inevitable after a dominating first-half performance that saw the ‘Atomic Ant’ create countless chances, with Jozy Altidore finally capitalising just before the break.

However, Drogba, ably assisted by fellow DP Ignacio Piatti, helped ensure that Toronto would rue their missed chances. Montreal’s star pair inspiring a late stage turnaround, that gave Mauro Biello’s Montreal Impact what could be a key playoff advantage.

Albeit the mood in the mood in the Impact camp may be tempered somewhat by a late knock to their Ivorian talisman. Drogba’s influence has been so great that the teams playoff hopes may well firmly lie on the former Chelsea mans fitness, or lack thereof.
