Portuguese defender Jose Fonte could be on his way to join Manchester United before the transfer window closes later this month.

The 32-year-old staying put under new Southampton manager Claude Puel is a huge focus for club bosses, Independent.ie reports.

Earlier this month, Fonte fuelled the flames of speculation for a move after praising fellow Portuguese, Jose Mourinho.

“I have a great admiration for him, he’s one of the best in the world, and it is a source of pride seeing his success” Fonte said.

Fonte and Mourinho share the same advisor, renowned super-agent Jorge Mendes. When asked to comment on the speculation, the defender said: “I won’t deny that Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and it makes me happy to be associated with them, but from there to being a Manchester United player there’s a big difference.

“Obviously after winning Euro 2016 and being on a good level it’s normal that the interest of some clubs should arise, but I’ve got a contract with Southampton and I’m not worried.”

Southampton lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford last Friday, and play host to Sunderland this weekend, looking to earn their first win of the new campaign.
