Wayne Rooney’s wretched form continued in the fourth round of the League Cup against Middlesbrough, missing a penalty and turning in another anonymous display.

Manchester United had a host of chances to win the match, especially in the final 10 minutes of extra time when they missed some gilt-edge opportunities.
Despite their dominance the visitors remained resolute and forced their way to a penalty shootout where the home side saw three penalties saved.
The Red Devils’ captain, Rooney struck a tame spot kick along with Michael Carrick who blasted over the bar and Ashley Young’s penalty was superbly saved.
One player who cannot escape criticism at the moment is Rooney, who is devoid of all confidence.
Here is some of the best reaction from Twitter targeting the United skipper’s lack of form:
I've stuck by Rooney all season but nothing seems to be working, LVG needs to drop him, fed up.

LvG can't drop Rooney as he's a captain? His recent performances suggest he's a captain in name & don't warrant a start. #MUFC

Absolutely appalling.
9 players changed since Sunday.
2 strikers on for a penalty shootout.
One was Wayne Rooney.
Say no more.

Wayne Rooney. What a joke. We might as well play the rest of the season with 10 men. Dominated by championship defenders.

Needs to start from the top, no more coasting Wayne Rooney, you're robbing a living. #mufc
