Caretaker Aston Villa manager Kevin MacDonald failed to rouse his players in the fourth round of the League Cup, who suffered a 2-1 defeat away at Southampton.

Saints defender Maya Yoshida opened the scoring with a rasping left-footed drive on 51 minutes, before Italian striker Graziano Pelle sealed the game by smashing in a well executed volley from a sublime Dusan Tadic pass.

As the game petered out to its conclusion, Scott Sinclair converted a penalty with virtually the last kick of the game, which couldn’t paper over the significant problems facing a relegation threatened Villa.

It was yet another miserable evening for Aston Villa who are a club in complete disarray at the present time.

Things don’t get any easier for the Villans on Monday night when they travel away to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
