Melbourne Victory coasted to a win over Wellington Phoenix at Etihad Stadium in the now-customary pre-Melbourne Cup clash.
The Victory got off to the perfect start after just ten minutes as Besart Berisha found the net after a sweeping move from midfield. The Victory were certainly the dominant side for most of the half, but struggled to find a second goal to properly reflect the balance of play. However, both the Victory and the Phoenix were unable to put away their chances and the teams went into the break with the score at 1-0.

The home side would eventually be rewarded for the domination in the second half as an own goal from Andrew Durante and Berisha’s second of the game put the result beyond doubt. Berisha was a dominant presence in the forward line and could have secured a hat-trick had his teammates picked out his runs in crucial moments. With one eye on this weekend’s FFA Cup final against Perth Glory, the Albanian striker was withdrawn with 20 minutes to go and the Victory failed to increase their lead.
The result was a crushing blow to the end of a tumultuous week for the Wellington Phoenix. However, with 23 rounds of football still remaining there will still be plenty of feel-good stories for New Zealand’s A-League representative.

Berisha has:
– been denied a pen
– lost it at the ref
– scored
– kicked a guy in the headand it's only 12 mins in. Decent shift. #MVCvWEL

Well done MVFC, outplayed us in every way. A little disappointed with the result. Not good for our goal difference too. #COYN #SaveTheNix
