It was a weekend filled with drama, controversy and goals but one player stood out from the rest. Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero joined an elite group of Premier League players who have scored five goals in one match.

The Argentine joined the likes of Andy Cole, Alan Shearer, Jermaine Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov to become only the fifth player in Premier League history to net five goals in one match.

When Manchester City found themselves 1-0 down to Newcastle United courtesy of an Aleksander Mitrovic header, the 2014 champions were in danger of dropping a third consecutive Premier League match. However, Aguero had other ideas.

The 27-year-old managed to open his account for the day three minutes before half time to bring his side level, following a lacklustre opening 45 minutes from Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

The Argentine then gave City the lead just after half time with the aid of a deflection and two minutes later established a two-goal buffer with a lovely chip over the oncoming Tim Krul, to all but put the result beyond doubt.

Aguero added a fourth on the hour mark with a lovely curling effort and scored his fifth just two minutes later to cap off an outstanding display.

What made the performance even more remarkable was that Aguero only needed 22 minutes (and nine touches) to find the back of the net five times, a Premier League record.

With his side trailing 1-0 and heading for another loss in the Premier League, Aguero took responsibility and turned what was looking like an uncomfortable afternoon for the home side, into an unforgettable one.

So for producing an outstanding display and almost matching the performance of Robert Lewandowski, Aguero is the EPL Hero of the Week.
