On 30 January, 2013 Liverpool agreed a deal with Italian side Inter Milan to sign a young Brazilian, who, we were told, was full of talent and potential.
Just over two years later and Philippe Coutinho is now a Kop favourite. Departing legend Steven Gerrard, who will join LA Galaxy at the end of the season, predicted such during the midfielder’s first season at Anfield, when he said: “He’s got moments of magical brilliance. He’s a top player and he belongs in a Liverpool shirt.”
The talent long recognised by his own supporters and team-mates has now been identified by his peers too, with selection in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year and a third-placed finish in the PFA young Player of the Year accolade.
The respect and acknowledgement of fellow professionals is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon a footballer.
