Thierry Henry – 2007 (£16 million)

It was with immense sadness that Arsenal fans said goodbye to Henry who earned legendary status in North London during his remarkable eight-year career in N5.

Along with Vieira, Henry’s departure was the signal for troublesome times ahead for the Gunners, as they have never truly replaced the striker’s incredibly prolific goalscoring prowess.

The Frenchman top scored for the Catalans in his first season but his second was undoubtedly his most memorable as the club won an unprecedented treble, scoring 26 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions, forming a lethal front three along side Eto’o and Lionel Messi.

Henry put the ghosts of 2006 behind him by winning his long-awaited first Champions League crown in 2009, adding European club glory to his already glittering CV.

Next season saw Henry claim another league title, a UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup, meaning Barca, at one stage, were the holders of six major pieces of silverware.

After loosing his place to the emerging youngster Pedro, Henry left the club in 2010, joining MLS franchise New York Red Bulls. In all, Henry made 121 appearances, netting 49 goals and claiming seven major honours.
