Van Gaal’s happy farewell conceals his lacklustre time in England.

It was reported, barely a dozen hours after United’s triumph, that Jose Mourinho will take over as manager at Old Trafford next week. Louis van Gaal, gazumped though he might feel with silverware in hand, cannot be genuinely surprised; his failure to achieve Champions League qualification was always going to be the key to his future.

Furthermore, the stale football his team have played will be the lasting legacy he leaves in England, a sad thing for a manager coming to the end of such a fine career. The looming spectre of an unemployed Mourinho has been there, like a cold wind on van Gaal’s neck, ever since the Portuguese left Chelsea. It is lovely that he can leave an FA Cup champions, but, in truth, Van Gaal’s time at United will not be remembered fondly.
