With so much left to play for in the final group stage matches of the Euro 2016 tournament, UEFA may have to implement tie-breakers in order to help decide who will progress to the knockout rounds.

These tie-breakers take into consideration a number of key factors, to help decide who will progress.

Outside90 provides a full rundown of the rules UEFA may have to look toward over the coming days, as the group stage draws to a close.

If two or more teams are to finish on the same amount of points at the end of the group stage – the following will be used to decide who will progress:

  1. The head-to-head result of the two teams will be taken
  2. The head-to-head goal difference of the two teams
  3. The head-to-head goals scored by the two teams
  4. Goal difference of all group games
  5. Goals scored in all group games
  6. If teams still remain level and they are playing one another in their final group game they will advance to a penalty shoot-out
  7. Fair play record (3 points for a red card, 1 point for a yellow card)
  8. Drawing of lots

The Euro 2016 tournament saw an increase to 24 teams, resulting in six groups of four and the top-two from each earning automatic qualification for the knockout stages.

In this instance, the four best third-place finishers will also progress.

The best third-placed finishers are decided by this process:

  1. Points achieved in the group stage.
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Fair Play Record
  5. UEFA national team coefficient ranking
