With so much left to play for in the final group stage matches of the Euro 2016 tournament, UEFA may have to implement tie-breakers in order to help decide who will progress to the knockout rounds.
These tie-breakers take into consideration a number of key factors, to help decide who will progress.
Outside90 provides a full rundown of the rules UEFA may have to look toward over the coming days, as the group stage draws to a close.
If two or more teams are to finish on the same amount of points at the end of the group stage – the following will be used to decide who will progress:
- The head-to-head result of the two teams will be taken
- The head-to-head goal difference of the two teams
- The head-to-head goals scored by the two teams
- Goal difference of all group games
- Goals scored in all group games
- If teams still remain level and they are playing one another in their final group game they will advance to a penalty shoot-out
- Fair play record (3 points for a red card, 1 point for a yellow card)
- Drawing of lots
The Euro 2016 tournament saw an increase to 24 teams, resulting in six groups of four and the top-two from each earning automatic qualification for the knockout stages.
In this instance, the four best third-place finishers will also progress.
The best third-placed finishers are decided by this process:
- Points achieved in the group stage.
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Fair Play Record
- UEFA national team coefficient ranking
