Reigning Euro champions Spain have announced their provisional 25-man squad for Euro 2016, with a number of surprise selections made by Vicente De Bosque.

There is no room for Chelsea striker Diego Costa after a quieter second season at Stamford Bridge, netting 12 goals in 28 Premier League appearances. Also left out are Fernando Torres (Ateltico Madrid), Juan Mata (Manchester United) and Santi Cazrola (Arsenal).

Costa had been battling a leg injury in the latter stages of the season, but it is unclear whether that injury is the reason for his omission.

Atletico Madrid’s highly-rated Saul Niguez is included, despite never earning a senior cap for his country yet.

Real Madrid youngster Lucas Vazquez has also been called up for the initial 25-man squad, which leaves out a host of experience in Costa, Mata, Torres and Cazrola.

Spain will face Czech Republic, Croatia and Turkey in Group D, taking on Czech Republic in their first game on the 13 June in Toulouse.
