Crystal Palace end Watford’s unbeaten home start with a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road.

In what was a very stop-start game it required a solitary penalty to separate the two sides. Wilfried Zaha was brought down just inside the box by Watford right back Nyom and, despite the desperate protests from the Watford players, the referee pointed to the spot. Yohan Cabaye stepped up and blasted the ball past Heurelho Gomes, who guessed the right way but flailed in vain with the ball just out of his reach.

Watford tried hard to get back into the game before full time, but they were unable to create any good chances; most were broken up by the central defensive combination of Brede Hangeland and Scott Dann or by Cabaye in the midfield. For Watford, the best chance they had to take the lead was when Jurado hit the crossbar from a free kick, with Wayne Hennessey beaten.

The game started and ended at a frantic pace, but much of the middle periods of the match were disjointed because of the 33 fouls given away from both sides. The ill-temper from both teams really affected the flow of the game.
