Honours were shared on Sunday morning at the St Mary’s following a pulsating 90 minutes.

The contest was truly one of the proverbial two halves. Southampton were clearly the better side in the first half and were in front in the 21st minute through centre-half Jose Fonte from a Dusan Tadic corner. Their league was doubled 16 minutes later through Fonte’s central defensive partner, Virgil van Dijk, almost comically poking home after the ball hit the same post twice, firstly from Graziano Pelle’s header and then from van Dijk’s follow up.

With plenty of work to be done to get back into the contest, Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri brought on Nathan Dyer and Riyad Mahrez at half time, with both having a huge impact in the game. Dyer provided the assist for Jamie Vardy’s first goal, while Mahrez played Vardy in for his second, equalising at the death.

In the end, the Foxes were deserving of their point, while Saints manager Ronald Koeman will be left ruing his side’s inability to hold on for three points after a dominant first half.

The one point apiece sees Leicester sit fifth on the table, while Southampton now hold eighth place.
