West Ham have confirmed the signing of free agent Alvaro Arbeloa on a one-year deal.

The full back returns to the Premier League for the first time since 2009, when he departed Liverpool for Real Madrid in a £3.5 million deal.

Arbeloa brings experience to the West Ham squad, boasting 53 caps for Spain, where he was part of the World Cup winning side in 2010, as well as taking home the European Championships in both 2008 and 2012.

He was also a member of the Real Madrid side that were victorious in the 2013-14 and 2015-16 Champions League campaigns.

Sky Sports report that the 33-year-old will act as a mentor for Sam Byram, who West Ham fought of stiff competition from rival clubs to sign in the 2016 January transfer window.

The move should also accommodate the opportunity for young hero Michail Antonio to primarily be deployed in his preferred wing position.

Arbeloa will join training imminently and could make his debut appearance at the Olympic Stadium when West Ham take on Watford after the international break on September 11.
