Club-record signing Jackson Irvine scored a vital goal in Burton Albion’s 3-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Melbourne-born midfielder struck a wonderful glancing header moments before half-time to reassert Burton’s lead, after Gary Hooper converted a penalty to cancel out Kyle McFadzean’s opener on seven minutes.

Burton put the game to bed when Lloyd Dyer made it 3-1 on 77 minutes with a close-range finish. Despite Wednesday having 62% of possession, they only managed to engineer eight shots and three on target.

Irvine’s terrific performance at the heart of defence helped Burton climb to 15th on the table and claim their first ever win in the Championship.

Other Australian players to feature in the Championship and League One this morning included, Aaron Mooy, Bailey Wright and James Meredith.

Mooy’s calmness and passing range saw Huddersfield Town end with 60% possession and a deserved point away to Aston Villa. Astonishingly, Huddersfield had 724 touches against Villa – the highest under manager David Wagner – and Mooy had 102 himself.

On the other hand, Wright played a full 90 minutes and suffered a slender 1-0 defeat against highly-fancied Derby County, while Meredith featured for 90 minutes as Bradford City secured a 2-1 win away to MK Dons.
