Barcelona technical director Robert Fernandez believes a failure to utilise their expensive investments has hurt Real Madrid’s transfer prospects.

The Blaugrana have welcomed six high profile players this transfer window, including the likes of Jasper Cillessen and Samuel Umititi, while their La Liga rivals can only count the re-signing of Alvaro Morata as a summer highlight.

Fernandez used James Rodriguez and Isco as examples of players who previously went to Real Madrid for high fees only to sit on the bench.

“European teams that cannot make investments is because they make large investments who do not play,” said Fernandez in an interview with RAC1.

“They are making large investments. It’s sometimes difficult to improve the bench.

“They have players who do not play and have cost a lot of money.”

Fernandez’ statements come in the wake of midfielder Andre Gomes’ signing for the Catalans from Valencia,  snubbing interest from Real Madrid to play at the Nou Camp.

“It’s an honour to wear this shirt,” Gomes told reporters at his unveiling.

“I’ve fulfilled a dream for me and my family, I had to choose and I chose the best team.

“Each team has their own style, and Barcelona fits mine best. It has to do with my identity, philosophy and what I consider important to football.”
