The biggest game in the league

The centrepiece fixture of the league produced another outstanding advertisement for the game in Australia. A four goal first-half was end to end, with four first class goals on display. With a crowd of 16,000+, there was plenty of noise, atmosphere and passion off the pitch to match the tension on it.

Another two fantastic goals in the second-half, after a strong display from the Sky Blues, topped off a thoroughly entertaining fixture.

These clashes consistently produce the goals, with two of their regular season meetings in the last campaign ending in 3-3 draws.

Their rivalry is, arguably, the biggest and fiercest in the competition and their matches continue to reflect that time and time again.

Gersbach is a star for the future

Starting his first game for the season, the 18-year-old full back was ever present in this game. He was lively down the flank and posed a constant threat, particularly in the opening stages of the first-half. He was so good and caught Victory’s full backs out on multiple occasions and was ultimately rewarded with the assist for Sydney’s opening goal.

He continued to utilise the wide space left open by Victory’s defenders and had a relatively solid performance in defence as well. There is no doubt he will provide Graham Arnold with an excellent selection dilemma come next round.
