Perth Glory secured a 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory in their round five catch-up fixture at nib Stadium last night.

A 75th minute Diego Castro goal sealed the Glory the three points and their third win of the season.

The home side showed their attacking intent early, with Josh Risdon registering a shot in the opening five minutes. However, it was the Victory who dominated the majority of the first-half. While they held possession better, they failed to look threatening in front of goal and the 0-0 score line was taken into the half time break.

Perth had a penalty shout and Besart Berisha had a shot hit the cross bar, yet with 15 minutes to go, the substitute  Castro scored what would be the winning goal.

17-year-old debutant Jamal Reiner’s bursting run into the box to set up Castro, who only had to poke the ball past Vukovic from close range.

The win sees Glory jump to eighth, while the Victory succumb to their third loss in a row.

Castro the difference

Perth Glory’s Spanish marquee ultimately helped his side gain all three points with his second goal of the season.

The Glory were looking a little toothless up forward and Castro’s introduction returned dividends. He was immediately positive, in the right place at the right time for the goal and continued to push the Victory defence – namely with his free kick effort which forced Danny Vukovic into a save.

While the Glory will look forward to Andy Keogh’s return after his signing last week, and hope he can replicate his goal scoring exploits from last season, Castro was crucial in ensuring the Glory stayed in the winner’s book.
