Tony Walmsley shows no signs of abandoning expansive game plan

It was perhaps the most exhilarating opening 30 minutes of play this season. Both sets of midfielders ran at break-neck speed to join attacks, which left plenty of holes to be exploited.

The exciting talent that the Mariners possess looked to be relishing in their involvement. Despite falling short of a result today, this shootout style is a refreshing change from that which the players adopted under Graham Arnold or Phil Moss, and is sure to boost crowd numbers in Gosford.

Melling could displace Paartalu from the starting XI

Jacob Melling’s performance as twin all-action central-midfielder with Aaron Mooy was hugely promising. The 20-year-old was a revelation after being promoted from the youth side last season and deservedly earned himself a senior contract to take part in the City revolution.

The youngster provides van’t Schip’s midfield with added dynamism, which has been lacking after Robert Koren’s poor start to the 2014-15 season. His eagerness to get forward and support attacks means City can be left short at the back, but this will improve in time.

As the game wore on after the killer third goal, Melling assumed a more defensive role in front of the back four to help his side close out the contest and ensure of maximum points.
