Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory played out an insipid 0-0 draw in front of a dismal Adelaide Oval crowd on Friday night.

In what was largely a dull first-half, both sides were extremely cautious in their approach with neither Melbourne nor Adelaide prepared to take the initiative as it ended goalless at the interval.

After the break, the tempo of the game was almost identical to the first-half, very lacklustre and stop start due to a number of petty fouls. The Victory came the closest to breaking the deadlock after Kosta Barbarouses’s goal was correctly adjudged offside and then hit the post minutes, but Adelaide managed to hold on for a share of the spoils against a 10-man Victory outfit.

Chances coming at a premium for United

While overall it was a cagey affair, the Reds in particular struggled to create any genuine chances which will be a concern for boss Guillermo Amor moving forward. Eli Babalj was isolated quite often in attack, starved of service with Marcelo Carrusca not at his proficient best in finding the perfect pass to play the former Heart striker in on goal. Even against 10-men following Leigh Broxham’s dismissal Adelaide rarely troubled Danny Vukovic in the Victory goal. Sergio Cirio provided the only real promise in wide areas for the home side, but his strike in the final minute of proceedings was unable to attain the three points.
