A Bruno Fornaroli double inspired Melbourne City to a 3-1 win over Central Coast Mariners in an entertaining contest at AAMI Park on Sunday.
Melbourne City
Thomas Sorensen – 7: Was tidy overall. Nothing he could do about Fitzgerald’s strike.
Paulo Retre – 7: The more effective of the full-backs, played an excellent ball which Fornaroli finished.
Connor Chapman – 7: Looked composed at the back.
Patrick Kisnorbo – 8: Leapt highest to bury a Mooy free kick on 11 minutes. Solid aside from a loose touch that allowed Ferreira a half-chance.
Ben Garuccio – 4.5: Booked in the 25th minute for chopping down Feirreira. Did not offer much in an attacking sense.
Aaron Mooy – 9: Sent in a tasty free kick from the left in the 11th minute that was met and buried by Kisnorbo. Millimetres away from scoring with a superb free kick three minutes later and was a menace in midfield.
Stefan Mauk – 5.5: Struggled to have a big impact offensively. Subbed off late.
Jacob Melling – 6: Afforded City some sturdiness in midfield. Picked up a late booking.
Stefan Zinni – 4: Was slipped in by Fornaroli on 17 minutes but sent his routine effort wide. Lacked an end product.
Steve Kuzmanovski – 5.5: Always looked to gallop forward and keep Neill on the defensive. Replaced by Gameiro.
Bruno Fornaroli – 9: Played in Zinni excellently early on and his hold-up play was impressive thereafter. Put City back ahead in the second half with a simple tap-in before doubling the lead.
Substitutes
David Williams – 7.5: Replaced Zinni on the 50-minute mark and had an immediate impact, laying a through ball on a plate for Fornaroli. Picked up a needless late booking for kicking the ball away.
Corey Gameiro – 6.5: Like Williams, had an impact. Forced Izzo into action twice.
Jason Trifiro – N/A: Brought on to chew up time.
