Early goals to Aaron Mooy and Stefan Mauk put City in a commanding position, but the Jets rallied. A brace to Milos Trifunovic sandwiched Ben Kantarovski’s guided header to earn the Jets maximum points.
Here’s a complete breakdown of how each player performed.
Melbourne City
Thomas Sorensen – 6: Not at fault for any of the visitors’ goals. Made a few regulation saves outside of that.
Paolo Retre – 5: Had little impact and did not contribute once the pressure was on.
Patrick Kisnorbo – 6: After some promising form of late, the captain needed to stand up in the face of Newcastle’s resurgence.
Connor Chapman – 6: Along with Kisnorbo, should have been able to defend Kantarovski and Trifunovic’s headers with greater efficiency.
Ben Garuccio – 6: Failed to provide the usual drive he is capable of on City’s left.
Jacob Melling – 6: Did not impose himself on this match as he did last week against the Mariners. Replaced on 75 minutes for Matthew Millar.
Aaron Mooy – 6: Somewhat lucky with his goal, but the turn in the lead-up was exquisite. Did not produce his usual magic after City’s struggles began.
Stefan Mauk – 6: Continues to grow as a player and has added a goal threat to his repertoire. However, he faded badly as the game wore on.
Steve Kuzmanovski – 6: Another energetic display without a cutting edge. Replaced on 55 minutes for Wade Dekker.
Bruno Fornaroli – 7: Wasted his best chances to score in the first 10 minutes. The Uruguayan’s hold up play was excellent but could not find a goal.
David Williams – 6: Assisted Mauk for City’s second, looked relatively comfortable in his return to the starting XI. Replaced on 55 minutes for Corey Gameiro.
Substitutes
Corey Gameiro – 5: Missed a great chance to put the game beyond doubt. Struggled to make an impact as the visitors defended with a deep line.
Wade Dekker – 5: Wasteful in attack and did not keep the ball well enough.
Matthew Millar – N/A: 75th minute substitute and was unable to make a mark.
