Defensive frailties still haunt Liverpool
We were treated to the sight of two Liverpool defenders, and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, all deciding to leave Alan Hutton’s cross, from which Gestede scored, ghosting in at the back stick to pull a goal back for Villa. For all the summer investment in the Reds back line, they are still conceding far too many sloppy goals, many of which are down to a lack of communication.
The centre-back partnership of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho is relatively new and is likely to improve as the season progresses. But after leaking nine goals in their opening seven games, under-fire boss Rodgers will need to address this issue if the team from Merseyside are to reach their full potential during the 2015-16 campaign.
