Sherwood is famed for his attacking line-ups but today against a Liverpool side lacking in confidence, he chose to start with three defensive midfield players in Ashley Westwood, Carlos Sanchez and the returning Idrissa Gana Gueye. If Sherwood’s plan was to keep things tight and frustrate the home crowd then it was left in tatters when Villa conceded within the first minute.
Chants, albeit fairly muted, of “you don’t know what you’re doing” emanated from the away end in the closing stages as the pressure cranks up another notch in the claret and blue camp. The general feeling among the fans seems to be that Villa have the players to be far better than their points total suggest, but that Tim’s tactical frailties are becoming a real cause for concern. With this defeat, they now drop into the bottom three.
