Alex Gersbach (Sydney FC)

Sydney FC left-back Alex Gersbach has long been regarded one of Australian football’s most promising prospects. Gersbach was a member of the FFA Centre of Excellence where he was named Player’s Player of the Year in 2013-14 and joined Sydney FC ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.

Gersbach made his debut aged just 17 in the FFA Cup and went on to become a regular member of Sydney’s first team, making 22 appearances for the Sky Blues. Gersbach’s season ended sourly, however, as he lost his place to Nikola Petkovic in the final few rounds of the regular season and was left out of the matchday squads in Sydney’s semi-final and grand final appearances. Despite this, Gersbach’s maiden senior season was impressive, with his defensive work tidy and his willingness to create down the left-flank resulting in Gersbach notching three assists in the campaign. Gersbach will have learned much from his first season in the A-League and will be aiming to make the left-back role his own in 2015-16.
