Wade Dekker (Melbourne City)

Melbourne City striker Wade Dekker has earned his spot in City’s senior squad by virtue of his goal-laden performances at youth level. Dekker won last season’s National Youth League Golden Boot and scored on his debut for City in the FFA Cup win in preseason over Wellington.

Dekker has had an eventful preseason, starting for City in their marquee friendly with parent club Manchester City and featuring prominently in John van ’t Schip’s starting lineups, scoring against Adelaide United and NPL Victoria sides North Geelong and Oakleigh.

With the retirement of Socceroo Josh Kennedy, the number nine jersey is ripe for the picking at City. Uruguayan signing Bruno Fornaroli will likely have first crack at addressing City’s goalscoring woes from 2014-15 as the favoured man up front, but in Dekker, City have a striker waiting in the wings who has ticked all the boxes thus far. Dekker has shown that he has that intuitive poacher’s instinct as well as the willingness to chase balls down and hold the ball up. City’s forward line will undergo massive change in 2015-16 and Dekker is one who could yet upstage his more well known teammates and cement himself in City’s starting XI.
