Spanish midfielder Miguel Corona has decided to leave Brisbane Roar after one season with the club to return to his homeland.

The 35-year-old veteran experienced a successful campaign with the Roar, particularly on a personal level in which he completed the most passes in the league with an impressive 1848.

He was also awarded the 2015-16 Gary Wilkins Medal for his exploits with the Queensland outfit and played every game during the A-League season.

Corona revealed it was not an easy decision to make in what was an emotional farewell from the former Almeria man.

“I would like to thank the Club, the Technical Staff and especially John for giving me the opportunity to play for BRFC,” Corona said.

“To my teammates, thank you for helping me become a better player and taking care of me.

“Finally, thank you to the fans for all the support you have shown me.”

Brisbane coach John Aloisi praised Corona for his professionalism “on and off the field”.

“From day one, the way he conducted himself on and off the field was a credit to himself and his family,” Aloisi said.

“From the very beginning, we knew we had signed a player who would be a true leader at our club.

“Miguel is someone who embraced our club values and we’re fortunate to have known such a great professional.”

Football Director Craig Moore admitted it was a tough choice to grant him an early release, as Corona still had a year to run on his contract – set to expire at the end of the impending A-League season.

“Whilst we are sad to see Miguel go, we understand the reasons for him wanting to return home at this stage of his career,” Moore said.

In his solitary season with the Roar, Corona netted two goals, laying on a further five assists.
