Norwich inflict more misery on Manchester United

Although this result will only see speculation increase about United coach Louis van Gaal’s future, Norwich deserve credit in some of the headlines for their impressive performance. Cameron Jerome and Alex Tettey struck in each half to underpin a first win at the Theatre of Dreams for Norwich since 1989. City’s previous four visits had failed to produce even a solitary goal. The result is just the kick-start Alex Neil and his men needed after a disappointing return of two wins in 12 games. With their draws against Arsenal and Everton and this win at Old Trafford, the Canaries have proven they can hold their own in the division. Consistency is required for them to establish their stay.

Pressure mounts on van Gaal

Forget the ‘philosophy’ and the injuries that have plagued Manchester United over the past months, they have won just three of their last 12 games. Injuries or not, that is unacceptable for a club of United’s stature. They have scored just 22 goals, joint-eighth-best in the league and a figure easily bested by Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez by themselves. Again, not acceptable for a club that used to be able to boast about its attacking tradition. Not only are Man United failing to score, they are now conceding as well. A previously watertight defence so deceiving with its statistics is now seeing its luck disintegrate and the reality come to the fore. Its record, as impressive as it was, was probably down to the opposition’s inadequacies rather than anything special on their part. All these developments are things that must be addressed by van Gaal. Now winless in six games, every game without a victory will only intensify the speculation concerning his future at the club.
