Record breaking day for Palace

In arguably one of their finest Premier League days, Crystal Palace created some history and buried a demon that has plagued them all season. In all their matches this campaign, when they have scored first, they have always won in the same manner as when they have conceded the first goal, they have always lost. Alan Pardew must have been fearing the worst when Cisse put Newcastle up, but the comeback from Crystal Palace has ensured that interesting aspect of their season has now been put to bed. The win for Palace is their first over the Magpies since 1998 and their biggest ever in the Premier League.

Mitrovic left out

A few eyebrows were raised when Aleksandr Mitrovic was dropped for Cisse, seeing as though it is not up front where Newcastle’s biggest problems lie. However the decision looked to be a smart one when Cisse scored. Eventually, Palace got back into proceedings, and it seemed only logical to bring the Serbian on with the Toon chasing the game. Instead of Mitrovic coming on, McClaren decided to trust Jamaal Lascelles (centre-back), Siem De Jong (attacking-midfielder) and Yoan Gouffran (second striker) in turning around the deficit.

Pardew silences former club

The biggest talking point heading into this clash surrounded how Pardew would fare against his former side. The 54-year-old seemed to be driven out of Newcastle by unhappy fans, but at Palace he has looked at home since day one. He has revitlised this Palace team and delivered a crushing blow to his former employers courtesy of this 5-1 win.
