Crystal Palace have put last weekend’s disappointing defeat behind them, courtesy of a crushing 5-1 victory over Newcastle United at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Steve McClaren called for a reaction following last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Leicester and his Newcastle side got off to the perfect start after Papiss Cisse headed the visitors in front after 10 minutes. Their joy was only short-lived as Palace were level within four minutes. James McArthur will claim the goal, however it looked to have taken a deflection off Paul Dummett.

It would only get worse for the Magpies as a Yannick Bolasie strike three minutes later, followed by one from Wilfried Zaha just before the interval, meant that Alan Pardew’s men went into the break 3-1 up.

Second half goals from Bolasie and McArthur ensured it was yet another miserable day for Newcastle.

Newcastle’s defence all over the place

Newcastle’s defending against Crystal Palace can only be described as utterly shambolic. Not to take anything away from Crystal Palace who were brilliant, but all five goals could have been prevented. The Dummett own goal could have been stopped if McArthur was closed down; Bolasie was able to give Palace the lead after the ball travelled past at least four defenders who failed to clear. The third and fourth goals were scored as a result of poor marking, while the fifth, scored by McArthur, was similar to the training drill where you dribble past the cones. The Geordies have now conceded eight goals in two matches, a very worrying statistic from their perspective.
