Atléti’s depth the key to progressing in the Champions League
Today’s fixture gave rare opportunities for Stefan Savić, Siqueira, Saúl and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco in the starting XI and each put out an excellent performance against Astana. While the Kazakh side is the weakest of the group, the win nonetheless demonstrates the strength of depth at Simeone’s disposal. With an important domestic fixture against Valencia upcoming, Simeone still had the ability to rest key players, also fielding a strong team who have the ability to compete against elite competition.
With fatigue a common nuisance and threat to success for most teams in competing in multiple competitions, Simeone has the ability to rotate to accommodate for certain matches where other managers simply do not have the luxury in doing so. Provided no unfortunate and significant injuries were to occur, Atléti have a great chance to go far this season on all fronts this season and replicate the success of the 2013-14 season particularly with the Champions League.
