Western Sydney Wanderers have signed 18-year-old local product Emilio Martinez on a one-year deal.

Martinez joins the Wanderers on a scholarship contract, their third player with such a deal alongside Liam Youlley and Jackson Bandiera.

Martinez went through the England-based Nike Football Academy, of which now Celtic and Socceroos midfielder Tom Rogic is a graduate.

Like Rogic, Martinez plays mainly as an attacking-midfielder.

Signed on his 18th birthday, Martinez, a former Red and Black Bloc (RBB) regular, says it is a dream come true to join his hometown club.

“Spending a year at the Nike Academy was fantastic, getting to play against some of the best teams in the world and experiencing the different conditions, teams and styles has made me a better player physically and mentally,” Martinez said.

“It’s like a dream come true to sign for my hometown club.

“I used to watch them play, sit in the RBB and see it all from an outside perspective and now I’m on the inside I can see what the Wanderers are such an amazing club.”

The Wanderers open their A-League account on 8 October in the blockbuster Sydney Derby at ANZ Stadium.
