The second match in Group A saw Switzerland secure priceless 1-0 victory against 10-man Albania at the Stade Bollaert.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner kick found Fabian Schar who beat an out of position Etrit Berisha in the opening exchanges of the match.

Albania’s woes were compounded when captain Lorik Cana was sent off just after the half-hour mark for a stupid handball and second yellow of the match.

In their debut at the European Championships Wales dispatched Slovakia 2-1 in bubbling and buoyant atmosphere at the Stade de Bordeaux.

Wales’ talisman Gareth Bale scored a magnificent free-kick on 10 minutes, only for their opponents to equalise on the hour mark through Slovakian substitute André Duda.

However, Chris Coleman and Wales would have the last laugh when the introduction of Hal Robson-Kanu’s scuffed shot squeezed inside the near post with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The Three Lions looked poised for a vital three points after a sublime Eric Dier free-kick, only for Russia to find a 92nd minute winner through Vasili Berezutski.

England created the better chances on the night but failed to translate their ascendancy into a two-goal lead and ultimately paid the price.
