Melbourne City boss John van’t Schip has praised his side’s resilience, saying they showed a huge amount of character in their fighting 2-1 derby win.

City took a 2-0 lead after half an hour, but faced a big test in the second period as Melbourne Victory dominated, applying constant pressure on Thomas Sorensen’s goal.

Yet City held firm and took home three hard-earned points.

The Dutchman lauded the strong mindset shown by his players as they were put on the back foot.

“Getting the goal against us just before half time is always a difficult moment,” van’t Schip said.

“Their fighting spirit was unbelievable tonight and the fans… they cheered them through the game.

“This evening there was less (of the football we wanted to play) but if you then see the character we put on, and you can combine those two, then I think you’re in the right direction.”

Despite the win, van’t Schip did not get carried away, saying elements of City’s play still require some work.

“The character in the team, the backing up, the fighting, is another thing that is getting to another level. Hopefully we can built from there and make another step because it’s (progress) not done.

“We get a big game next week, Brisbane, they’ve been showing some good football so it’s another good test to see where we are.”
