Arsenal put an end to its sequence of ‘glorious defeats’

In 2012 it was AC Milan, in 2013 it was Bayern Munich and in 2014 it was AS Monaco. It has become a habit for Arsenal to leave themselves to much to do late on after a series of mishaps and despite a gallant effort, fall just short of victory.

Going into this crunch dual needing to win by a two-goal margin, the writing was on the wall for Arsenal to again come so close yet so far in their quest to progress to the next round.

The Gunners defied their recent history of heroic failures by getting the job done this time around in reasonably comfortable fashion.

The next test will come in the round of 16, where it has been five consecutive seasons in which the North Londoners have bowed out at the first knock out stage.

Can they finally overcome this major physiological barrier and take the next step this season? The draw on Monday will reveal all.
