Giroud steps up at a critical time

On a night where big performances were required from big players, Giroud answered the call, leading the line with aplomb on a perfect occasion to net his first treble for the club.

The Frenchman has been criticised in the past for his minimal output in big matches. His performances on the big stage have gradually improved over time and this outing is the pick of the bunch, combining his usual efficient link-up play with a ruthless end product.

After a red card in the opening match against Dinamo Zagreb, Giroud bounced back superbly, scoring both home and away against Bayern Munich before finishing in barnstorming fashion in Athens.

Giroud continues to divide Gunners fans as this type of world class performance can be muddled with clumsy touches and a wastefulness in front of goal. Regardless of that, his importance to the team is undeniable and he will be critical to Arsenal’s future endeavours this season.
