Bayern Munich began their Champions League campaign by besting Greek side Olympiakos in a hard-fought affair at the Karaiskakis Stadium last night.

It took until the 52nd minute for Munich to open the scoring, when Thomas Muller sent a ball into the net from out wide that floated over the home team’s goalkeeper. It was a performance far below what would be expected from the German heavyweights and they were lucky not to be drawn level, when Salino was sent through on goal only for his shot to hit the side netting, when he really should have scored.

Olympiakos were punished for the miss with a minute from time when Mario Gotze finished well from a tight angle and Muller converted a penalty after the impressive Kingsley Coman was tripped inside the box. It will be seen as a perfect start for the Germans, but Pep Guardiola will know work still needs to be done if his side wants to fight their way to Milan next May.
