Liverpool have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford sealed a 3-1 aggregate tie victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Manchester United faced an uphill battle, following their 2-0 defeat at Anfield in the first leg but they found a route back into the tie just after the half-hour mark.
Nathaniel Clyne made a clumsy challenge on Anthony Martial and the referee rightly pointed to the spot.
Martial took it upon himself to take the penalty and sent Simon Mignolet the wrong way with an expertly taken shot.
The visitors wasted some glorious chances, especially Jordan Henderson who blasted over from 12 yards with the goal at his mercy.
Marcos Rojo should have levelled the tie on aggregate with half-time approaching, but contrived to put it wide from close range.
That missed proved costly when Philippe Coutinho silenced the home faithful after an incredible piece of skill, turning Guillermo Varela inside out and then from the acutest of angles he deceived David de Gea and chipped the ball in at the near post.
The second half mustered very little for either side, as Liverpool saw the game out with composure to compound Louis van Gaal’s woes and cap off a memorable night for Reds fans.

Scholes: “Over the two games, Liverpool were by far and away the best team.” #LFC

FT: #MUFC 1-1 #LFC The passion and fight we shown early on fizzled and faded as our inevitable exit drew near. Awful pic.twitter.com/p28S3UjNey

De Gea far and away #MUFC best player as they’re soundly beaten by an in-transition #LFC over two legs. What a story that tells.

#LFC looked shaky in opening 25 mins but after that rarely looked troubled. #MUFC can’t go on with LVG

Imagine #MUFC’s club-exutives and directors sitting around a table and genuinely saying, “Let’s have another season like that!”. End it.

Betrayed the traditions of our great club has LvG. I’d honestly have Giggs, at least we’d play our old style, wingers & 2 strikers. #mufc

Probably the best I’ve seen Adam Lallana play tonight. A complete, tidy performance. If only he could produce that consistently #LFC

Jose is a good manager but he is not a panacea to all #MUFC woes. We need structural change and players moved on in the core of the team

Henderson playing while sick. Don’t any of you question his captain credentials, wants to play every game and tries his hardest. #LFC

Mourinho needs to be in place now. He has to plan and hit the ground running. Needs to see now what he needs to do. Summer too late #MUFC

Scored 16 and conceded only 3 in our last eight games, which includes playing both Manchester teams twice #LFC
