Australia overcame a stubborn Iraqi outfit to start their World Cup campaign with a win at the Perth Rectangular Stadium.

The Socceroos had to wait until the second half to open the scoring through Massimo Luongo, before Tomi Juric doubled the lead seven minutes later.

Outside90’s Nicholas Durbano takes a look at three players who shone for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Tomi Juric

The former Western Sydney striker was a constant threat inside the box for the Socceroos. After a shocking miss, he atoned for this by assisting Luongo with a superb cross before dispatching one himself. A new transfer to Luzern in Switzerland has looked to reinvigorate Juric and maybe the best of him is still coming to the surface.

Trent Sainsbury

A consistent wall in front of the Australia goal. Always looked assured on the ball as he continues to improve and provides a sense of composure in Postecoglou’s backline. Never really troubled by the Iraqi attackers and worked brilliantly in tandem with Mark Milligan at the heart of defence.

Tomas Rogic

A superb outing from the attacking midfielder as he grew into the game during the second half. Provided a solid outlet in between the midfield and forwards, linking well with Juric and Leckie time and time again. Form like this is pleasing to the eye for Postecoglou and could be essential to Australia’s push for qualification in the next couple of years.
