Outside90’s Matt Riggs takes a look back at the week’s most popular football trends from across the globe for this edition of Social Spot.

Messi vs Ronaldo

Yet another individual trophy goes by which always sparks the rivalry between the Argentine and Portugese superstars. Earlier this week Lionel Messi was named the best player in Europe for the second time as voted by 54 journalists. This spurred a number of different reactions on social media, as fans jumped at the chance to ridicule Cristiano Ronaldo. One of the favourite quotes, however, came from a fellow player – “Cristiano is a guy who always gets first row tickets to see Messi win his awards,” stated Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Champions League draw reaction

The UEFA Champions League draw is something that all football observers look forward to, well, maybe except Liverpool fans. This season’s draw has pitted some big names in the same groups. PSG will face Real Madrid, Juventus will go up against Manchester City and Bayern Munich take on Arsenal just to name a few. This image seemed to be a fan favourite, as it depicts an early prediction for the group stage.

Gareth Bale

The Welshman looks to win back the Real Madrid fans this season and prove that he is a true world class talent. If he can continue to score goals like this, then one can be sure he will succeed in the endeavour. Sit back and enjoy his long range strike.

Social media haunts Joseph Barton

Joey Barton is one of those players who you either hate to love, or love to hate. He signed for Burnley earlier this week and some fans were very quick to bring up some old Tweets in which he insulted his new team. After seeing these, it is hard to say which side the Clarets faithful will be on and he may have to adapt to his new surroundings very quickly to win them over.

Transfer rumors and news

The window was relatively quiet this season, with most of the big stars all locked down by their current clubs, but this has not affected the amount of money spent. This week we have seen the announcement of Kevin De Bruyne to Manchester City for a club record £55 million and David De Gea agreed a deal to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid, only for the deal to fall through at the last minute. Just one of many changes for United over the last couple of years.

Rooney’s biggest fan!

As it turns out, Wayne Rooney’s biggest fan is in fact from Wales. The Swansea City mascot’s jaw-dropping reaction to seeing the striker in the tunnel went viral earlier this week. As can be seen in the video, the young man seemed very calm and focused on the walk out, but as the referee walks past he looks up to see Rooney and just cannot contain the joy.

Very confused FIFA fan?

This image has been circulating around the Twitter  this week as a man was photographed with an Xbox controller while watching Newcastle United take on Arsenal. With the new FIFA16 being released later on this month, many fans quickly jumped at the opportunity to praise the incredibly life like graphics, but unfortunately this was not the case.  As it turns out, the controller was being used for statistical analysis on the match, yet the sheer humour has seen it pinch the number one spot this week.
