Ahead of Wellington’s Matchday 6 opener against a winless Adelaide United we take a look the match’s key talking points

Save The Nix

#SaveTheNix has taken off since the FFA declared the New Zealand side’s future is in doubt. Back at home for the first time since that shock announcement; this weekend’s opener against Adelaide is crucial for Wellington. With tickets selling for as little as $2 in a desperate attempt to perform financially on top of pulling in results, all eyes will be on Westpac Stadium not only on the field, but also in the stands.

Amor under severe pressure

Last weekend Adelaide bagged their first ‘official goals’ – if you exclude the previous two own goals – of the season in a 4-2 loss to City. Anchored to the bottom of the table and chasing their first win of the season Guillermo Amor and his men will be desperate to capitalise on that momentum and hit the ground running in New Zealand, ensuring they don’t suffer the same fate as so many at Westpac Stadium. If they fail to return home without any points questions will be asked of how many more unsuccessful road trips Amor will survive?

McGlinchey’s absence a big plus for Reds

The Reds building on momentum might have been the visitors’ focus midweek, but the squad also have a bit of luck on their side thanks to crucial absences through international duty – most notably Michael McGlinchey. The Kiwi international not only pulls the strings for the Nix, but is also the league’s second most influential force going forward, without him sitting just behind the forwards, the Reds defence might be in for a much quieter night.
