While one part of England’s northeast was on cloud nine, the other was in the depths of despair.
But for those jubilant Sunderland fans, their survival could not have been scripted any better.
Needing just a win against Everton at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night, the Black Cats emphatically swept aside a poor Toffees side 3-0, sending their local rivals Newcastle United as well as Norwich City down to the Championship.
While Sunderland fans were busy celebrating a decade of top flight survival and baiting their close neighbours, devastated Newcastle supporters were busy condemning the club’s board as well as its players.
A second relegation in seven seasons has come at the worst possible time for Newcastle, who will miss out on the riches of the Premier League’s TV money. To add insult to injury, they will be the lowest ranked of the northeast’s three major clubs after Middlesbrough secured their return to England’s top tier.

Hopefully people will wake up. We’ve tried different managers, dozens of players. The one key theme is Mr Mike Ashley. He must be removed.
