Are goalkeepers too much of an obstacle when trying to score? Is the offside rule killing any possible attacking action?

An article written by Tom Elliot which appeared in this morning’s Herald Sun suggests that this is the case in football. With weak players, conspiracy-crazed fans and oppressive rules choking the sport right now:

“Soccer has a couple of other major deficiencies. First is its scoring, or lack of it,” claims Elliot

“If soccer provided better entertainment, spectators might devote more of their attention to what’s happening on the pitch.

Statements such as “another big issue soccer fans have is an alleged vendetta by the so-called AFL-mad Herald Sun against their sport. What nonsense,” were just some of the highlights to come from the extensive opinion coloumn.

In a swift response, Australian fans took to Twitter to offer their own ideas on ways in which the world game could be made entertaining for Elliot and the other everyday viewers:
