Udinese the architects of their own downfall

Three wins on the bounce against Sampdoria, Chievo Verona and Atalanta have been followed up by two heavy losses at the hands of Fiorentina and now Inter Milan, with the defensive performance in the latter being a cause for concern for the Bianconeri Friulani.

Prior to Inter taking the lead, Colantuono’s side was easily the better of the two and could have taken something from the game if such crude errors had not been made at the back for the home side.

For the opening goal, young midfielder Bruno Fernandes saw his lax pass to Maurizio Domizzi cut off by the energetic Icardi, who then hit across Karnezis to put Internazionale into the lead. Next was Domizzi to make the blunder. As the 35-year-old received the ball at the back he made a clumsy attempt to pass sideways and ended up missing the ball entirely, allowing Jovetic to pounce and finish nonchalantly. And Inter’s third was a result of yet another poor back pass, with Francesco Lodi this time the one who handed Icardi the chance with a wayward pass into the home side’s own box.

Udinese’s attempts at playing up from the back proved to be unsuccessful on the day as they shot themselves in the foot with no less than three amateurish errors.

Handanovic an unlikely hero in a 4-0 victory

It is not common for a goalkeeper to have somewhat of a starring role in a 4-0 victory, however Handanovic was one of the best performers throughout the 90 minutes at the Stadio Friuli.

The Slovenian was regularly tested by the home side – which was the much better of the two in the first half – and came out on top against Colantuono’s men in several duels, making a few world class saves in the process. One in particular early on in the game saw Handanovic deny Cyril Thereau in acrobatic fashion, as the Frenchman unleashed a thumping effort that looked bound for the back of the net, however the former Udinese man was on hand to ensure this did not occur.

The 31-year-old’s importance to the Nerazzurri was on full display against Udinese, and he has been one of the best performers in an Inter Milan shirt in 2015-16, and will be a key figure if Inter are to go close to claiming the Scudetto.
