Manchester City and England winger Raheem Sterling is facing six to eight weeks on the sideline thanks to a groin injury.

The 21-year-old picked up the knock in Manchester City’s derby defeat to Manchester United, a match in which team mate and England goalkeeper Joe Hart also went down with a calf issue.

Hart is only likely to miss two weeks of action, but for Sterling this could be the end of what has been a turgid season for the young star.

Sterling moved to City from Liverpool before the beginning of the season in a transfer that played out through the papers. Stories circulating of money issues and the player refusing to train with his squad at Anfield came at a time when his stock was sitting so high.

He eventually forced through his £49 million transfer, which saw him become the newest addition among the highly-priced talent at the Etihad Stadium.

Sterling has scored six goals in his 26 league matches for City this season as the Sky Blues currently sit fourth on the table.

Should Sterling miss eight weeks he could still return for one match in the season – The Champions League Final, should City make it. They will begin their march to Milan with a tie against PSG in the last eight, who knocked out fellow English team Chelsea to get there.

He would then also be in doubt for England’s Euro 2016 campaign and manager Roy Hodgson must pick his side by the end of May, and likely without seeing Sterling since the Manchester Derby.
