Wayne Rooney set a new record for most Premier League goals scored by a player for a single club as Manchester United snatched a vital win at Anfield.

Recent clashes between the two north-west neighbours have not been great in quality and Sunday’s outing certainly did nothing to change that.

Manchester United failed to manage a single shot on target in what was a dour first-half, while their fierce rivals only recorded one of their own. David de Gea was once more on hand to produce some crucial saves in the latter stages, as Liverpool edged closer to a breakthrough.

Rooney failed to make any sort of impact throughout the game, but when the chance fell to the Englishman, he made sure of it.

Poor defending from the home side allowed Marouane Fellaini to head the ball into the crossbar, before Rooney lashed home the rebound to complete the ultimate smash-and-grab.

His first at Anfield in 11 years, the goal also moves the 30-year-old to within seven of Sir Bobby Charlton’s club record of 249.

The Manchester United captain now has five goals in four games since the New Year and talk of potential title challenge is back on the cards, according to manager Louis van Gaal.

He may not have lit up Anfield with a sparkling performance, but a winner in a fixture of such importance is worth gold and breaking a record and that is why Rooney is Outside 90’s Hero of the Week.
