Ahead of the 2016 instalment of the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in Milan, we take a trip down memory lane and remember one of the greatest European finals of all time.

Down 3-0 at half time, in a cup final no less, it is easy to simply throw in the towel and roll over. Then European powerhouse AC Milan, boasting the likes of Andriy Shevchenko, Paolo Maldini, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka, quickly established what looked to be an unassailable lead at Turkey’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

But “here we go!”

What Liverpool would do next quickly established itself in footballing folklore. Steven Gerrard’s superb glancing header kicked off a five-minute flurry before Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso ensured Milan’s advantage was reduced to rubble by 59 minutes.

Some inspired goalkeeping from Pole Jerzy Dudek saw the game through to extra time before he became the hero, saving penalties from Shevchenko and Andrea Pirlo.

Liverpool do European nights better than most, but this unbelievable triumph will take some beating.
