Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou says Melbourne City midfielder Aaron Mooy has improved tremendously since the start of the A-League season.

Postecoglou dubbed Mooy as the best player in the A-League late last year and hasn’t changed his opinion on the 25-year-old.

The Socceroos boss announced on Saturday morning in Melbourne they will be hosting Greece in a friendly at Etihad Stadium and took the time to praise how much the A-League has stepped up in season 2015-16.

“I think I said he’s the best player in the competition before Christmas last year,” Postecoglou said.

“I think he’s held that form. He’s still very effective in the right areas and all round game is improving, so he’s great.

“Mooy isn’t the only one, I think the A-League in the last few weeks has been good.

“The standard’s raised and there’s quite a few Aussies who I’m pleased about putting their hand up for national team selection and Aaron’s amongst them.”

Socceroo Tommy Oar is currently without a club, after he was granted release from Championship side Ipswich Town in January after reports of homesickness.

The winger had two years remaining on his contract in England with reports now circulating that he may return to the A-League, with most of the rumours suggesting that he would be heading to Sydney FC.

Postecoglou urged the 24-year-old find a club soon because of the importance it carries to play for your country.

Oar has made 28 appearances for the Socceroos

“There are indications he’ll be in the A-League. That’ll be fantastic for the competition because he’s a quality player and needs to find a club and get his career back on track,” he said.

“It’s vital he finds a team, because you can’t train on your own.

“I’m disappointed Tommy doesn’t have a club yet to be honest, football career is very short, often absences are taken out of your hands through injury or non-selection, so that cuts your time even shorter.

“To be without a club for so long is disappointing for Tommy, I hope it gets sorted quickly.”
